Pizza for breakfast? A nutritionist claimed that a slice of pizza in the morning might be healthier than a bowl of frosted flakes as it contains more protein, more fresh ingredients, and less sugar. Moreover, a lot of commercial-brand cereals don’t have enough nutritional value and don’t provide adequate protein or healthy fats.
Chelsey Amer, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, said that even though an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk both have almost the same amount of calories, the pizza will give a strong balance of protein, carbs, and fats. Cereals, on the other hand, have the same amount of calories in a candy bar.
One serving of Frosted Flakes has 110 calories, zero grams (g) of fat, and 10 g of sugar. This may not seem a lot, but most people don’t just eat one serving. In fact, a 2014 study by Consumer Report revealed that most people eat a maximum of 132 percent more than one serving, depending on the size of the bowl. On the other hand, one slice of cheese pizza has about 272 calories, 12 g of protein, and 10 g of fat, and 4 g of sugar. Furthermore, pizza has all the major food groups: grains, fruits, vegetables, and meats.
Amer wrote in her blog that eating a slice of cheese pizza in the morning will prevent you from eating a whole pie later. In another study published by the Obesity Coalition, it was revealed that some popular cereal brands contain more than 35 percent of the ingredients.
“Unless you’re choosing the whole grain option, cereal can cause a surge of blood sugar, which releases insulin and that being repeated every day is not good for your body,” nutritionist Tammy Lakatos Shames of the Nutrition Twins, previously told Daily Mail Online.
Still, other food and health experts caution against eating pizzas bought from restaurant chains like Domino’s.
Wendy Kaplan, registered dietitian, told Daily Mail Online that pizza isn’t an “ideal meal,” because the nutrients found in it does not surpass the unhealthy substances it contains, such as refined carbohydrates, saturated fats, and sodium. In addition, the amount of calories and fat a pizza has differs depending on who is making it. Thus, people are not sure how much salt they are consuming.
As an alternative, Kaplan said that instead of buying pizza, they could choose to just make their own pizza with whole grain crust and adding a lot of vegetables. Then, it could become a healthier breakfast choice. There are also healthier cereal choices that consumers can opt for instead. A cereal can be considered healthy if one serving of it contains a minimum of 6 g of fiber, which can help reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels and help make you fuller longer, and if it contains a maximum of 3 g of sugar only.
Breakfast cereals are made from refined grain, which is often produced by a high-temperature process called extrusion. They are also highly processed and contain a lot of added sugars and refined carbs. For breakfast, it is best to choose whole, singe-ingredient foods. Some excellent breakfast choices include oatmeal, Greek yogurt, and eggs. Whole egg, in particular, makes an excellent breakfast option because it is rich in protein, healthy fats, and nutrients. Moreover, it can help reduce cravings and help in weight loss.
